An Eye-Opening Mask Art Therapy Exercise: Find Your True Self

Mask Art Therapy Activity To Find Your True Self

Hello friends, today, I'll show you an art therapy exercise you can do using a mask.

This art therapy exercise is great for someone who wants to explore themselves - understand yourself, your identity, and find different aspects of yourself.

I’m Youhjung and I have been helping people through art therapy for years and I am sharing this with you so that you can make therapeutic art for your own self-care.

Make sure you're in safe, quiet place where you will not be disturbed during the creative process. Also, keep your phone on silent or turn off your notifications.

If want to watch the step by step video tutorial where I share the exercise in detail you can see it here:

You can also include any other material that you want to use to decorate your mask.

Now that you are ready, here are the steps:

  1. Decorate the outside of the mask, representing how you think others or the outside world sees you

  2. Decorate the inside of the mask, representing how you see yourself (the inner you)

There is no wrong way to do this. You can also choose to vary the materials a lot too.

And there are many ways to use masks - not just to explore identity but also to explore feelings, our fears or our strengths, resilience...

Using a mask is perfect as a metaphor for exploring the different aspects of ourselves. There's something about masks - that really pull us in, evoke feelings, and actually has a long tradition in many cultures. It's a powerful symbol that helps us share our human experience.

Using collage materials like tissue paper and magazine cut-outs, this is a project that's so easy to get absorbed in; and usually time goes really fast because we're so focused in the process! It is truly great for almost any age range.

Creating this mask helps us express what we haven't been able to express before. It lets us think deeply about who we are, what is the "mask" that we wear on the outside and how that is similar to different from who we are inside. Share our real experiences.

This project assumes that we all have masks we wear, different aspects of ourselves that are seen or not seen on the outside. It's okay to have these things, and this process just helps us understand ourselves more, accept our different aspects more. We simply bring more awareness to this and practice embracing all of who we are.

Reflective Writing

After you have finished the work bring a pen and a journal/notebook to write with. To reflect on our art-making process and the artwork, let’s do some writing.

Write down your answers to these questions:

  • Describe the inside and outside parts of the mask, how they're similar and different?

  • How do the outside and inside aspects of you relate to each other?

  • What have you learned about yourself through this mask project?

I hope you enjoyed this exercise. Make sure to pin this or bookmark it for whenever you need to come back to it in the future. Also, share this post with a friend or family.
